Album-Release: #2 Schubert "Der Tod und das Mädchen"
The second album in the orchestra's own label SKO records has been released!
A string quartet played by a chamber orchestra? Absolutely! The Stuttgarter Kammerorchester has recorded Schubert‘s existential Quartet No. 14 „Death and the Maiden“ with a cast of 17. They are led by award-winning conductor and violinist Thomas Zehetmair, himself a passionate chamber musician, who brings out the great drama of this instrumental chamber play in all its shades. A very own, powerful dimension opens up in Schubert‘s sounding life-or-death struggle.
When Franz Schubert, who was seriously ill with syphilis, composed his 14th Quartet, he was possibly already anticipating his death. For while his song "Der Tod und das Mädchen" ("Death and the Maiden"), composed in 1817, ends on a conciliatory note, the finale of the quartet, which also takes up the song theme again and again, is dramatic and harsh. "The incredibly fine character elaborations of the whole piece go far beyond the song theme," Zehetmair says. "They make the work a universe of its own; it is undoubtedly one of the most artful and moving pieces in string literature."
